Wairarapa

A lush, green and unique region located in the south east corner of the North Island of New Zealand. Three hour's drive from Napier and one hour’s easy drive from Wellington, the Wairarapa is a region that has something to offer virtually everybody - whether it be outdoor pursuits, browsing for antiques, enjoying some of the finest wines and dining available anywhere in the country or simply soaking up the spectacular landscape. Founded by the Small Farm Movement of the 1850’s, the region is still largely agricultural. Wairarapa's small country towns retain their colonial character and feature many shops selling distinctly local products. The vineyards of the South Wairarapa are world-renowned yet still offer top-range wines at affordable prices to the discerning visitor. Greytown's bustling Main Street offers a superb collection of beautiful boutique shops featuring fantastic art and craft items and quaint cafes; Martinborough too has several unique outlets. Shop for antiques in Featherston and paua shell goods in Carterton.
