Designer/History

The history of Mount Maunganui Golf Club began in 1935 when a band of sportsman and women contemplated the challenge of developing a golf links next to the sand dunes of the then infant town of Mt Maunganui (a village of 450 people). Land was offered free of rental by Mr Horace Barker with the only stipulation that the course should be know as the "Brandonmere Links". Mr C. Redhead, then New Zealand's only acknowledged golf architect drew up plans free of charge, by invitation form his friend Mr Fraser Baddeley, Captain, Secretary and Course Superintendent. At first there were only 9 holes then 13, and just before the second world war the full 18 were completed. In 1941 200 acres of Mr Horace Barker's land (including the golf course) was sold and subdivided and the club went out of existence until 1947 when 92 acres was purchased by a trust, including the remaining 9 holes south of Golf Road. the course was redesigned, with the additional 9 holes by Mr C Redhead and Mr H.P Dale and throughout the changes over the years has maintained basically the same general links of 60 years ago.
